Questions We Get a Lot
A louvered pergola has adjustable roof slats that let you control how much sunlight and airflow you allow in — ideal if you want flexibility across changing weather conditions. A solid hardtop pergola offers fixed, full coverage and is better suited for those who want a more defined, weather-resistant outdoor room. Both styles available in this collection are built with durable aluminum or steel frames designed to hold up season after season.
All pergolas in this collection are designed for homeowner assembly using the included hardware and instructions — no contractor required. Most customers find the process straightforward when two or more people work together on installation. We recommend reviewing the product's included manual before you begin to plan your build time and tools accordingly.
Start by measuring your available outdoor space and thinking about how you plan to use the structure — dining, lounging, or a combination of both. A 12' x 20' footprint works well for most mid-size patios, while 14' x 22' or larger suits expansive decks or those who want room to host a full outdoor furniture arrangement beneath. Allow at least a foot of clearance on each side from fencing or walls when planning placement.
Pergolas ship free on most orders within the Continental U.S. — please note that Alaska and Hawaii are excluded from free shipping. If your pergola isn't the right fit, our 30-Day Returns policy applies — visit our Return Policy page for full details on how to initiate a return.
About Our Pergolas
A pergola is one of the most transformative additions you can make to an outdoor space. At its core, it is a freestanding or attached overhead structure that creates a defined zone in your backyard — a place that feels intentional, sheltered, and designed for living. Whether you are looking to carve out a shaded dining area, build a covered lounge beside the pool, or simply bring architectural shape to an open patio, a well-chosen pergola changes how the entire yard feels and functions. Buyers come to pergolas from different starting points. Some want a permanent, weather-resistant structure they can count on through rain and sun alike — those buyers gravitate toward heavy-gauge aluminum frames and galvanized steel or louvered roofing systems. Others want the warmth and character of natural wood, which lends a more organic, crafted aesthetic to the space. The right choice depends on your climate, your maintenance preferences, and the overall look you are building toward. Key things to consider include roof style, frame material, overall footprint, and whether features like curtains, netting, or gutter channels are important for how you plan to use the space.
